medici.tv will broadcast Operalia live from La Scala

Operalia is the famous Placido Domingo's competition for the young singers. The competition started in Paris in 1993, when Nina Stemme, Kwangchul Youn and Inva Mula shared the 1st prize.

Ever since the competition took place every year. Sadly many winners were 4-year-wonders, while far many of those who were prized 2nd or 3rd became actually famous.

This year, besides the usual prizes, there will also be two Birgit Nilsson prizes. First two rounds of competition are finished and the finals are scheduled for Sunday, May 2 at 20:30 (cet) in Milan at La Scala. The concert will be live webcast by Medici.tv .

The finalists are
Dinara Alieva, soprano - Russia
Andrei Bondarenko
, baritone - Ukraine
Sarah-Jane Brandon
, soprano - South Africa
Rosa Feola
, soprano - Italy
Margarita Gritskova
, mezzo-soprano - Russia
Emiliya Ivanova
, soprano - Bulgaria
Giordano Lucà
, tenor - Italy
Chae Jun Lim, bass - South Korea
Ryan McKinny, bass-baritone - USA
Ievgen Orlov, bass - Ukraine
Nathaniel Peake, tenor - USA
Stefan Pop, tenor - Romania
Sonya Yoncheva, soprano - Bulgaria

Luca Giordano is only 22 and is a Pav in disguise. I'm the most impressed by the 23 year old baritone Andrei Bondarenko (listen to this and this) and by Sarah-Jane Brandon (listen to all of her 4 arias here).
Dinara Alieva and Ryan McKinny are already known (wrt the other singers in the competition), as well as Sonya Yoncheva. Emiliya Ivanova sounds great too...

Don't forget to register on Medici.tv before the show [it takes 1 minute to register, they don't sell you stuff, and it will prevent you from being cut in the middle of the concert by the annoying requests to register to continue watching].

  1. Anybody watching? AMAZINGLY high level of competition!

They are all truly wonderful, but Ryan McKinny is ridiculously brilliant! Singing like he just did, it's hardly beatable by anyone. And so, I just got a new fave. ;) Margarita Gritskova is particularly impressive too.

    1. Ievgen Orlov - Ella giammai m'amò (Don Carlo, Verdi)
    2. Emiliya Ivanova - O quante volte (I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Bellini)
    3. Giordano Lucà - Che gelida manina (La Boheme, Puccini)
    4. Sarah-Jane Brandon - Dis-Moi Que Je Suis Belle (Thais, Massenet)
    5. Andrei Bondarenko- Per Me Giunto... O Carlo, Ascolta (Don Carlo, Verdi)
    6. Dinara Alieva - E Strano... Sempre libera (La Traviata, Verdi)
    7. Nathaniel Peake - missed him :(
    12. Rosa Feola - E Strano... Sempre libera (La Traviata, Verdi)

  4. I like the most Andrei Bondarenko, Stefan Pop and Rosa Feola. I missed some of then because of my crappy connection (my internet provider seems to be forever "at work"). Loved the baritone who sang zarzuela...he was really good !

  5. The fearlessness of youngsters is impressive. Hey, a guy who sings O Paradis at the competition. How big is that? Sarah-Jane sang the aria from Thaïs. Ryan McKinny sang the toughest part of the Dutchman.

I believe Ryan will win but there are at least 5 of them who could win it too. Ryan should at least snatch the Birgit Nilsson prize ;)
