Traditionally the earliest announcement of the following operatic season comes from Amsterdam's DNO, one of the finest opera stages in Europe. Seeing the wave of horror that will overwhelm the Paris Opera, the program at DNO and La Monnaie look like "safe heaven"


September 2011: Iphigénie en Aulide & Iphigénie en Tauride [dir-Pierre Audi, cnd- Marc Minkowski] with Salome Haller, Nicolas Testé, Anne Sofie von Otter, Véronique Gens, Frédéric Antoun, Laurent Alvaro & Mireille Delunsch, Jean-François Lapointe, Yann Beuron...

This production was presented in December 2009 at La Monnaie in Brussels which I unfortunately could not see because of too much snow (!)


December 2011: Orest -- an opera bt Manfred Trojahn created in 1949 [dir-Kattie Mitchell, cnd-Marc Albrecht, cast: Dietrich Henschel, Rosemary Joshua,...]


January 2012: The Nightingale and other fables [dir-Robert Lepage, cnd-Xian Zhang, cast: Elena Semenova, Nabil Suliman, Ewa Wolak...]
DNO is one of 3 coproducers of the show premiered at the festival in Aix en Provence in 2010

Note also a revival of Don Carlo (very good production by Willy Decker!) with Andrew Richards in the title role.

  1. I think the Billy Budd must be the same production Richard Jones did in Frankfurt a couple of years ago set in a 1950s English Public School.

    I note that there is no good DVD of Billy Budd.

    I'll never understand the way they select the operas or production to be released on DVD. Instead of yet another (slightly different) La Boheme or La Traviata why not try with something different?! In that regard, ROH/Opus Arte is being unfriendly to Britten too.
