2010-2011, 2011-2012 2012-2013 with too many consonants [Eastern and Central Europe] :)

Central and Eastern Europe are not only reservoir of extraordinary singers and brilliant directors. They  too produce some wonderful shows. Only this season the first ever Wozzeck was staged in Moscow, directed by Dima Tcherniakov - no less! Tcherniakov's Tristan at Mariinsky was very starry as René Pape was the King Marke for a few shows... The new production of Les Troyens by La Fura dels Baus was premiered at Mariinsky. Good shows were staged in Budapest by very talented Balasz Kovalik. Narodowa Opera in Warsaw is one of the most creative places in Europe right now...

Janacek is everywhere in Prague: maybe not in their opera program, but definitely on one of many delicious beers [Janaceks own a famous brewery in Czech]

Below you'll find a selection of theaters and their new productions in 2010-2011 (to be updated in September)

Practically run by the travel agencies (who bring tourists to see whatever the show's programed), this theater is less and less interesting artistically ---> it's not surprising that  their website is so bad (not because of bad design, but more because of the lack of information).  For good productions of good operas by Janacek,  Prague is not the place to go...

  • Atilla [dir Arturo Gama] dir Luciano di Martino

They have a very rich program but this is the only opera I found with a label "new production" in 2010-2011.
Their's must be the clearest web-site of all the opera houses around! For each opera you could see who created it and when, if it's co-produced and who with..., with detailed but down to the point information. Way to go!

World premiere of the new opera by Philippe Fénelon "La Cerisaie" in concert, will take place at Bolshoi in December 2010. From the same article we learn that Tcherniakov will direct new production of Ruslan and Ludmila and the premiere is scheduled for November 2011, with Vladimir Jurowski conducting.

Opera Narodowa in Warsaw

  • Die Passagierin [dir David Pountney] with Elena Kelessidi, Artur Ruciński, Svetlana Doneva,  Roberto Sacca among others
  • Le Nozze di Figaro [dir Keith Warner] with Aleksandra Kurzak et al.
  • Les Troyens [dir La Fura dels Baus] with Sylvie Brunet et al Valery Gergiev will conduct
  • Turandot [dir Mariusz Trelinski]
  • Jakob Lenz (an opera by Wolfgang Rihm) [dir Natalia Korczakowska]
  • King Roger [dir David Pountney] with Scott Hendricks, Olga Pasiecznik, and Will Hartmann
Fantastic program in Warsaw. They are clearly catching up and getting to the very best of what the world of opera can offer today. Keep up the good work!

NB: 2 revivals with Marina Rebeka! Excellent website.

  1. Also the very fine Latvian Opera:

A beautiful house and in a country which produces a high proportion of world class singers e.g Garanca and judging by her debut at the ROH on Saturday ,substituting of an "ill" Gheorghiu, Marina Rebeka. On the matter of Gheorghiu the premier of an opera called the "Werewolves' Heiress" seems very intriguing in 2011 in Riga.

  2. Thanks John! Will look up that one too.

BTW, Kristine Opolais (Elvira in recent Don Giovanni in Aix) is Latvian too.

  3. Regarding the lack of Janacek opera productions in Prague, are you aware of the newly established biannual festival, Janacek Brno? Now in its second year, the festival is based on the presentation of Janacek's work with a particular emphasis on staged productions and offers the opportunity to see some less well-known as well as celebrated works. This year's festival will take place from 16th to 28th November. If it's Janacek you want, Brno, not Prague, is the place to go.
