Exciting program in Paris - March 2011



My selection of events (classical music and opera) to see in Paris in March 2011.

Salle Pleyel

  • Tue 1: Piano concert by Daniel Barenboim (Liszt), with Orchestre de Paris conducted by Omer Meir Wellber (Mendelssohn & Wagner) 
  • Fri 4: Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (OPRF) conducted by Myung-Whun Chung for Bruckner's 7th and 1 concert for a trumpet by Henri Tomasi [Alexandre Baty : trumpet] 
  • Sat 5: My fave orchestra - Budapest Festival Orchestra with Petra Lang and all conducted by Ivan Fischer: Liszt and lots of Wagner (Lang to sing the Immolation Scene from Die Götterdämmerung!) 
  • Sat 6: Les Arts Florissants with William Christie will perform the excerpts from operas by Rameau, with fantastic soloists: Ed Lyon, Emmanuelle de Negri, Hanna Bayodi-Hirt, and Alain Buet 
  • Wed 9 and Thu 10: Orchestre de Paris lead by Paavo Järvi will accompany Gidon Kramer in a Beethoven + Berg program 
  • Fri 10: OPRF conducted by a young and already famous Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado will continue with the program filled with Beethoven and Berg. Christiane Oelze will sing the Altenberg Lieder 
  • Sun 13: Of course you all love Nikolay Lugansky's interpretation of the pieces by Rachmaninov! Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester from Berlin will add the Beethoven's 3rd to the program, and Marek Janowski will conduct 
  • Mon 14: Murray Perahia for his yearly piano concert at Pleyel 
  • Tue 15: Anne Schwanewilms will sing Vier Letzte Lieder by Strauss, in a company of Orchestre National de Lille and maestro Jean-Claude Casadesus, who will add a few pieces by Wagner and Ravel to complete the program 
  • Wed 16 and Thu 17: Young and already famous, Rafal Blechacz, to perform the music by Haydn and Beethoven, together with Orchestre de Paris and maestro Järvi who will also perform a Symphony by Frank César 
  • Sat 19 e& Sun 20: Yuja Wang and friends from the Berliner Philharmoniker  
  • Mon 21: Lang Lang - Sonatas by Beethoven and Prokofiev, and Iberia by Isaac Albéniz 
  • Thu 24: Lang Lang (Piuano concerto no.3 by Beethoven) and Orchestre de Paris conducted by Christoph Eschenbach ( Classical Symphony by Prokofiev & #5 by Shostakovich) 
  • Sat 26, Sun 27, and Mon 28: London Symphony Orchestra lead by Valery Gergiev to perform Mahler's 7th, 3rd, and 9th (10th) respectively. N.B. Anna Larsson will sing on the second night
  • Tue 29: Lang Lang and Roberto Alagna (program unspecified - sic!) 
  • Thu 31: Tristan und Isolde (Act-2), Orchestre de Paris conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, cast: Iréne Theorin, Gary Lehman, Albert Dohmen, Iris Vermillion


      Théatre des Champs-Elysées

          • Sun 6: Nicolaj Zneider with the soloists from ONRF - program: Mozart and Brahms 
          • Sat 12, Mon 14, Wed 16, Fri 18, Sun 20, Tue 22: Orlando Furioso, new production [dir-Pierre Audi, cnd-Jean-Christophe Spinosi, cast: Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Jennifer Larmore, Verónica Cangemi, Philippe Jaroussky, Christian Senn, Kristina Hammarström, Romina Basso ]
          • Sun 13 & Wed 30: Emmanuelle Haïm and her orchestra Le concert d'Astrée will perform works by Telemann, Handel and Bach in their first concert and the Motets by Rameau in the second. Jaël Azzaretti will sing 
          • Sat 19: Fazil Say to play the piano works by Janacek, Schubert and Beethoven 
          • Mon 21: London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski to perform the Symphony no.4 by Brahms, and then to support Christian Tetzlaff in Beethoven's Violin Concerto 
          • Thu 24: Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Orchestre National de France lead by Yutaka Sado to perform the French pieces by Saint-Saëns, Chabrier, Roussel, and Connesson  
          • Sat 26: Hélène Grimaud and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by our new fave Vasily Petrenko 
          • Mon 28 & Tue 29: new HUGELY talented Russian piano-phenom -- Andrey Korobeinikov

          • Mon 14, Wed 16, Thu 17, Sat 19, Sun 20: Messiah, new production [dir-Oleg Kulik, cnd-Hartmut Haenchen , cast: Tilman Lichdi, Christina Landshamer, Anna Stéphany, Darren Jeffrey, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France
          • Thu 31: Orchestre National de France conducted by Daniele Gatti continue their voyage through the Symphonies by Mahler. This time it will be no.7

          • Sat 5: Brigitte Engerer and Accentus/Axe 21 will be conducted by Laurence Equilbey (or by Bruno Montovani) in a performance of pieces by Luigi Nono and Franz List 
          • Sun 6: All Liszt piano program by Olivier Latry & Jos van Immerseel 
          • Tue 8: String Quartet Diotima perform Nono (and Liszt too) 
          • Fri 11: Brussels Philharmonic lead by their music director Michel Tabachnik: Mazeppa by Liszt (Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, piano) and Musica Manifesto by Nono 
          • Sat 12: Anima Eterna Brugge conducted by Jos van Immerseel for some lesser known works by Liszt 
          • Tue 29: The Indian Queen, Les Arts Flo conducted by Paul Agnew, cast: Emmanuelle de Negri, Katherina Watson, Sean Clayton, Nicholas Watts, Callum Thorpe 
          • Thu 31: Lang Lang (paino), Roland Daugareil (violin), Emmanuel Gaugué (cello) assorted program of music by famous composer we get to listen to less frequently

            • Fri 4: Quartet Modigliani + Jean-Frédéric Neuburger (piano) + Diego Tosi (violin) play pieces by Chausson and Ravel 
            • Wed 30: Quartet Escher to perform music by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Jalbert, Beethoven

            • Tue 8: Cantabile – The London Quartet with Malcolm Martineau, piano: Songs of Love and Death (Vaughan Williams, Pearsall, Elgar, Sullivan) 
            • Thu 17: Felicity Lott - recital (Graham Johnson, piano), songs by Gounod and Schumann 
            • Fri 18: Soloists from Orchestre de Paris perform music by Janacek and Dvorak 
            • Tue 22: Soloists from the Wiener Philharmoniker - music by Strauss, Brahms, Enescu

            • Sat 12: Karine Deshayes - recital (Hélène Lucas, piano) will sing the songs by Fauré, Duparc and Poulenc

            • Sun 20: Assorted operatic arias sung by Barbara Bonney, Reinhild Buchmayer, Hui Jin, Norbert Steidl
