2011-2012 at Théâtre des Champs Elysées

Next season will start a little bit later than usual because they want to enlarge the pit [to be able to host a full philharmonic orchestra for the staged performance of The Rite of Spring] and to properly celebrate 100 years of existence [Théâtre des Champs Elysées was inaugurated in 1913.]

So the season will start in November 10, but the program they prepared for 2011-2012 is SUPERB!

Below I will fast-type the content of the program (i.e. a broad selection of what I find interesting), but you should consult their website (or see here) where the more complete program will be available "soon" (that's what they said today when I asked).

  1. Wow! Now that is an awesome program! So glad to see such names as Topi Lehtipuu, Christiane Karg, and Anna Bonitatibus, etc. Although they won't sing in the same opera/concert next season, I think their voices would match very well.

Hmmm, this program surely makes me want to be "tourist in-residence." :)

  2. Hi there! ;)
Now you can better see why I was so bitterly disappointed by the 2011-2012 program at the Paris Opera.

In Paris you already have this house (TCE) + some others, where several good operas are staged, and TCE brings most of the big stars to concert operatic performances. To diversify the cultural offer in Paris, the Paris Opera should have opted for something theatrically thrilling, rather than to concentrate their 2011-2012 season to the list of names -- singers who will shout in mostly outdated productions (new shows are scheduled to be directed by either inapt or lazy producers - except for Marelli, but Arabella is a shabby opera already, so...)

So if you come to listen to good voices, brilliant concerts, Paris is your city! [TCE rather than the Paris Opera which is too big to let you truly appreciate beautiful voices] But if you want to see some good opera productions Paris is not a city to run to (IMO)

  3. As I wrote at my "web-home", Arabella is one more false new production, since it was premiered in Graz in 2008, with - big surprise - Philippe Jordan in the pit. So we have only 4 real new productions, with 103 billion € of public founding.
The operatic season at the TCE is never very inspiring (the directors are not much more interesting than at Paris National Opera), BUT we have those tremendous concert seasons, with TCE, Pleyel, Cité de la Musique and other smaller halls (Louvre and Orsay auditoriums, Bouffes du Nord...) By the way, hope you didn't miss the fantastic chamber music week-end with Berlin Philharmonic soloists at Pleyel?

  5. Rameau, thanks for that info. Marelli should be good though. His shows in Graz are regularly brilliant and I like his and Herheim's attitude to create important shows in Graz -- small peaceful city, small theater, a cohesive troupe of people devoted to theater.
But of all Strauss' operas, Arabella!!!

I of course agree that musically Paris is fantastic in terms of quality and DIVERSITY. It's only that opera are unfortunately too irregular and uninspiring...

I missed the Berliners on Sunday. I had a friend over to Paris and we went to Bastille to see Stoyanova in Luisa Miller (mais quelle horreur ce spectacle!)

Hi Sempre Libera. It truly is fantastic ;)
