Gatti conducts - Christine Schafer shines

Mahler's Symphony #4, Théâtre du Châtelet - Paris, June 17 2010

Christine Schafer

The cycle of Mahler's Symphonies at Théâtre du Châtelet, performed by Orchestre National de France lead by maestro  Daniele Gatti continues, and last night we could listen to their performance of the Symphony #4. This is not among my favorite Mahler symphonies, but it was pleasant to listen to it again, after good 5 years or so, as this symphony sounds particularly good in the acoustics of Théâtre du Châtelet. To me, however, the evening was dominated by its first part, which was a selection of 5 songs from the cycle of songs Des Knaben Wunderhorn, magnificently sung by Christine Schafer.

The whole concert will be broadcast via Radio France Musique on Wednesday, June 30 at 9 am (cet).

Concerning the Mahler's 4th, I just spotted a video on YT from a performance by the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink, and with Christine Schafer singing. She really knows how to sing Mahler.

While preparing for this Mahler-marathon, Daniele Gatti was interviewed in Vienna and said this:

Next concert in this cycle will be the Mahler's 5th [September 29]. As an extra, there will be Matthias Goerne singing the Kindertotenlieder. Goooood!
